The Eastern Black Sea, particularly the province of Rize is the only available region in Turkey for tea cultivation due to its fertile soil, rainfall and and climate. This region is the sixth largest producer of tea in the world. Traditional Turkish Tea is a black sea that is cooked and served in a special manner. A double tea pot or ‘caydanlık’ as it is called in Turkey is used for making the tea. The bottom pot is filled with water which is set on the flame to boil. Meanwhile the top is filled with dry black tea leaves. When the water is done with boiling, some of it is added to the top into dry tea and the tea is left for fifteen to thirty minites to steep. In Turkish Tea Culture, the tea or ‘cay’ is served in small tulip shape clear glasses and a saucer, generally with two cube sugars. Once you arrive in Turkey, it will not be difficult to get Turks’ passionate love for their tea! Tea is found anytime anywhere in Turkey and there is no time or place to drink it. It is served with breakfast, post lunch and post dinner as well as every break or snack in the day. It is fundamental to Turkish social life. A breakfast, business meeting or conversation without tea is hard to imagine in this country.
