Princes’ Islands

Princes’ Islands

Right off the coast of Istanbul, this chain of 9 islands had been the final destination for exiled Byzantine princes, and after they were taken by the Ottoman Navy – members of the Ottoman sultans family were sent there. Out of these 9 islands, 4 were big enough to setle on; so, in 19th century, citizens began settling. Until present times, Buyukada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kinaliada kept evolving – while preserving their historical and natural background perfectly. Since no motor-vehicles are allowed, transportation is stil carried out by horse-carriages, downgrading noise and air pollution to the lowest levels.

Famous for its numerous Victorian-style Ottoman mansions, gardens, seafood restaurants and friendly locals, Buyukada – the biggest of Princes’ Islands – is the main destination for our daily trip into a completely different face of Istanbul.
